  1. Martin Luther King Jr. was murdered on the 4th April 1968 by James Earl Ray – a white ex-soldier who claimed to have been part of a conspiracy to kill the black civil rights leader.

Use Social Identity Theory to explain what how someone might become so prejudiced against someone from a different race or religion to want to kill them. You must refer to the context above in your answer. (6 marks)

2. There was a clash between fans of rival football teams in the city centre after the match. Several people were seriously injured and the damage to businesses in the centre was estimated to be over £2 million. With reference to this situation, evaluate Social Identity Theory as an explanation of prejudice towards other groups. (12 marks)
